Ostrich Nemo
On Vranjina Hill, at a farm in Montenegro, a flock of ostriches waited their turn for slaughter, confined in a concrete pen. Among them, a pair stood out—Nemo and Zara, inseparable companions. Before the holidays, the farmers took Zara away, separating the pair and plunging Nemo into sadness and depression.
The story of the farm and the ostrich pair spread thanks to a young volunteer and veterinarian who witnessed their tragedy. She launched a rescue and fundraising campaign to buy the ostriches’ freedom, with the help of a small group of volunteers under the banner “Freedom for Nemo.”
The volunteers managed to raise enough funds to purchase several ostriches, including Nemo. They contacted our shelter seeking a safe haven for the rescued birds.
At the shelter, Nemo recovered slowly. He was frightened and lost, but the daily care from volunteers, socialization with other animals, ample space, and freedom restored his trust in humans.
Today, Nemo is a symbol of hope at the shelter, and his story inspires volunteers to continue the fight for the protection and rescue of animals across Montenegro.
