A convoy of trucks carrying animals intended for a new circus arrived in Montenegro from Italy. Among them were two camels: the two-humped Milutin and the single-humped Budimir. Upon arrival, they were placed in a small, completely inadequate cage.
Due to failures in the control system at the time, animals carrying infectious diseases entered the country. A few weeks later, the city was struck by an epidemic, and subsequent investigations revealed that the source was the circus.
Milutin was seriously ill, with an infected wound on his neck, while Budimir was exhausted, malnourished, and affected by infection. A video showing their condition appeared on social media, sparking a strong public reaction. After citizen pressure, an order was issued to close the circus, but the fate of the animals was still uncertain. We were given only 48 hours to take them in, or they would be euthanized.
Our team reacted immediately. The camels, along with the other animals, were transported to the shelter where their long recovery began. With constant veterinary care, proper nutrition, and a safe environment, they gradually regained their strength.
Today, Milutin and Budimir live freely in the spacious pasture of our shelter. Recovered and calm, far from the inhumane conditions in which they were found, they enjoy the care provided daily by our professional staff.
